What is the National Laotian Presbyterian
Council?
Since 1979, the Indochina refugees started
resettling
in the United Sates. The Lao people were among these refugees.
The Lao people fled their country to escape the political, economical,
social, and religious persecution of
the communist regime. Some Laotians were Christians, while others were not. Lao
Christians came to this country seeking a new place to worship. Many
denominations opened their doors to allow these people to worship. The
Presbyterian Church USA was one of many who opened their arms to these
people. The First Lao Presbyterian Church was been established in Houston,
Texas in 1989 by Dr. James Oudom. At the same time, many fellowship groups have been explored
within the PCUSA. Acknowledging to the Lao Christians need to serve Christ together,
share
experiences, and helping each other within the PCUSA, the National Laotian
Presbyterian Council was established on July 18th, 1991 at Camp
Cho-Yeh, Livingston, Texas.
The NLPC is an organization designed to bring many Laotian Christian
fellowships together and seek more opportunities to serve Christ.
With this respect, we know that one person or one
denomination cannot serve Christ completely; therefore, we need to partner with other Christian
brothers and sisters to do the ministry of Jesus Christ. No one is
perfect, except Christ. Coming together is the starting point, working
together is the progress, and walking together is the success.
Another purpose of the council is to bring Lao Christian leaders within the PCUSA together to share
experiences and learn from one another. With this knowledge we can
better ourselves to serving, growing, and
bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone.
Our Mission Statement:
The National Laotian Presbyterian Council (NLPC) exists to glorify God, to bring the
good news to the Laotian people in the United States and around the world, to share
experiences and partnership with other Christian brothers and sisters to do
ministry, to strengthen the relationship between English and Lao Speaking
congregations, to provide resources of education, leadership and training for
Lao Presbyterian leaders, to provide consultation, translation, and other
assistance to churches, presbyteries, synods, and general assembly of the
Presbyterian Church USA, and to be partners with Lao Christian brothers and
sister around the world for ministry.
"But how can they call to Him for
help if they have not believed? And how can they believe if they have not heard
the message? And how can they hear if the message is not proclaimed? And how can
the message be proclaimed if the messengers are not sent out?..."
Rom.10:14-15
